Job Description

The San Francisco Jazz Organization (SFJAZZ) is the largest nonprofit jazz presenter in the western United States and one the most influential jazz arts and education organizations in the world. SFJAZZ is a dynamic creator and presenter of year-round programs, including the internationally acclaimed San Francisco Jazz Festival, the SFJAZZ Spring Season, SFJAZZ Education, and numerous other artistic and community programs. The SFJAZZ Center, the first standalone facility designed and built specifically for jazz, is now under construction at the corner of Franklin and Fell Streets in San Francisco – 35,000 square feet of performance, education, and administration spaces that will be the first physical home of SFJAZZ. The SFJAZZ Center is expected to open in January 2013 and will serve as a symbol for the organization’s robust thirty-year legacy and a platform for SFJAZZ’s mission to nurture a vibrant community and future for jazz by inspiring generations of jazz musicians and audiences.

SFJAZZ is seeking an experienced Director of Marketing who will join the organization’s senior management team and lead the marketing, communication, promotion, publicity and sales efforts for SFJAZZ in support of the organization’s mission and objectives. The Director reports to the Executive Operating Director and will also work closely with the Executive Artistic Director, the Director of Development and the Director of Education.

The Director of Marketing will be responsible for the strategy, planning, management, and execution of all marketing and sales activities for SFJAZZ in order to identify, attract, and obtain audiences, donors, and renters. This includes support for the brand and for fundraising, education, audience development, and rentals. The Director will be responsible for the strategy, development and execution of all marketing materials and collateral for SFJAZZ, including in support of the launch of the SFJAZZ Center. The Director will lead and manage SFJAZZ public relations and publicity efforts in support of its brand and programs. The Director will lead the box office and sales efforts, from strategy to delivery, including support for members, groups, and the general public. This scope will include research/analytics, marketing, media planning, advertising, branding, messaging, merchandise, media sponsorships, publicity and public relations, promotions, media relations and will involve collaboration with external vendors and partners, the board, and internal departments such as Development, Education and Artistic.

The Director of Marketing supervises a staff of nine full-time employees as well as consultants, interns and part- time staff .


The successful candidate will be able to handle multiple tasks, be flexible with priorities, be customer-service oriented, with attention to detail, a collaborative team spirit, and a positive attitude.

Bachelor's degree in arts management, communications, public relations, public administration, marketing or related field including fine arts, education, or business. Minimum of seven years experience that clearly demonstrates an understanding of event marketing, audience development and media/public relations required; equivalency considered. Performing arts experience highly desirable. Experience in institutional budget development and management required. Excellent written and oral communications skills and demonstrated effective team building skills essential. Knowledge of spread sheets/databases, understanding of effective advertising techniques, and understanding of media / public relations necessary. Must have proven management, leadership, creative thinking, communication, and negotiation skills. Knowledge of jazz and related music is important.
