Eliane Elias: Chet Baker Tribute
Eliane Elias Trio: Chet Baker Tribute
A lyrical and swinging pianist with a sensuously warm singing voice, Eliane Elias was a teenage piano prodigy in Sao Paulo when, like many Brazilians, she fell under the cool gentle sway of Chet Baker. “Chet had this way of singing and playing that was very unaffected, phrasing over the bar line, that we Brazilians have an affinity for. He was different than singers who belt - more intimate and lyrical,” said Elias, whose deeply pleasurable 2013 CD on Concord, I Thought About You (A Tribute to Chet Baker), summoned the haunting romance and grace of Baker’s sound. For this performance, acclaimed trumpeter Ingrid Jensen will join Elias’s sterling trio. Described by the All Music Guide as “one of the most gifted hard bop trumpeters of her generation,” Jensen is a talented composer and bandleader who has worked with a range of artists including Gil Evans, Dr. Billy Taylor and Ron Carter. Elias and Jensen will play classic numbers from the Baker songbook like “You Don't Know What Love Is” and “Embraceable You,” in lean arrangements that slip effortlessly from swing to bossa nova and back, leaving space for Elias’ tart, singing piano solos and Jensen’s brilliant improvisations.
