Cyro Baptista

After Cyro Baptista launched the volatile rhythm and dance ensemble Beat the Donkey, the mad scientist of Brazilian percussion formed a new band to expand stylistic boundaries while working within a more nimble, small group setting. Thus was born Banquet of the Spirits, a project immortalized on the wildly acclaimed self-titled release on Tzadik, the label run by jazz iconoclast and saxophone genius John Zorn. Their latest album, 2011’s Caym: The Book of Angels, interprets Zorn’s sublime Masada songbook dedicated to the Jewish Diaspora with a Brazilian and Middle Eastern twist. For this SFJAZZ date, longtime bass playing cohort Shanir Blumenkrantz and virtuoso fingerstyle guitarist Tim Sparks join Bapista in an exciting new trio formation. Born and raised in São Paulo, Baptista has been a major force in world music for three decades, touring and recording with luminaries such as Yo-Yo Ma (The Brazil Project), Herbie Hancock (Gershwin’s World), Paul Simon (Rhythm of the Saints) and Wynton Marsalis (Brazilian Carnaval) to name a few. With hypnotic percussion and multi-layered string wizardry, Banquet of the Spirits is guaranteed to tear the house down — and raise your pulse!
