Discover Jazz: The Melting Pot
Yiddish, Scat & American Popular Song
Before the labels - jazz, blues, swing, pop, Broadway - there was simply popular music. American popular song has been influenced by more than its fair share of cultural interchange and one the most fascinating of these “marriages” evolved between Black and Jewish populations. The musical relationship between these two cultures is the basis for many of the great standards we have today. Learn how these seemingly disparate cultures melded to create one of the most highly praised art forms in jazz. In this program, vocalist and historian Amanda King traces the cross-cultural influences between Black and Jewish music and musicians, and explores a repertoire that reveals how American popular music is truly a cultural ‘melting pot’.
