Discover Jazz: Women in Jazz pt.2
Women in Jazz: Pioneers of Social Change (Part II)
The contributions of women in American history, politics and social movements are the subject of this program, with a focus on civil rights leaders and their musical counterparts in jazz and beyond. Marcus Shelby delves into the many women who made their mark on American culture – from Phillis Wheatley, Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Jane Addams, Emily Dickenson, Angela Davis and Dolores Huerta to Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter, Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland, and others and explores the contexts of their work within the framework of social progress and Women’s rights. Historic recordings, poetry and archival materials will provide a rich background for exploration and discussion.
