Discover Jazz: Cubano Be, Cubano Bop
The Latin Big Band Craze
The explosion of the big band era would firmly cement the importance of dance music in both Cuban and North American cultures, with iconic figures at the helm including Machito & Mario Bauzá, Dizzy Gillespie & Chano Pozo, Pérez Prado, Bebo Valdés, Tito Rodríguez and Tito Puente. When audiences first heard this “new” music, they undoubtedly recognized the ideal marriage that was and is jazz and Cuban music.
Joining Rebeca Mauleón as a special guest for this class is trombonist, composer/arranger and educator Wayne Wallace, a five-time Grammy nominee and leading exponent of jazz and Latin jazz in the Bay Area and beyond. Wallace has performed and recorded with legendary masters including Aretha Franklin, Bobby Hutcherson, Tito Puente, Max Roach, Santana, the Count Basie Orchestra, Pete Escovedo and many others, and is a widely respected historian and teacher serving on the faculty of San Jose State, Stanford University and the Jazzschool.
