Due to illness, Toots Thielemans cannot travel and has canceled his U.S. tour. Instead, we are pleased to present an all-star salute to Toots featuring the greatest young harmonica player in jazz, Grégoire Maret, along with Kenny Werner, Oscar Castro-Neves and legendary Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira. Details below.
Salute to Toots Thielemans
Salute to Toots Thielemans
With Toots Thielemans recently taken ill, longtime cohorts Kenny Werner and Oscar Castro-Neves will perform in tribute to the jazz legend, accompanied by a pair of fellow luminaries – one a red-hot young harmonica star who is the heir apparent to Toots, and the other a pivotal figure at the heart of the Brazilian jazz revolution.
36-year old Swiss harmonica master Grégoire Maret has charted a stellar career with jazz greats like Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock and Cassandra Wilson. His many collaborators include George Benson, Kurt Elling, Mike Stern, Richard Bona, Sting, Prince, Elton John and even the grand master, Toots Thielemans, himself.
Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira is a true musical icon, having recorded and performed with Miles Davis, Weather Report, Chick Corea’s Return to Forever and countless others. For over four decades he has maintained a musical partnership with wife and vocalist Flora Purim, and has released two dozen albums as a leader.
No musician has been more closely associated with Thielemans over the past decade than Kenny Werner, one of the elite pianists in jazz since the 1970s. Rio-born guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves is a founding father of the early ‘60s bossa nova movement and also produced Thielemans’ star-studded Brasil Project albums. Join us for this special tribute performance, celebrating the inimitable music of NEA Jazz Master Toots Thielemans with the leading exponent of the jazz harmonica tradition.
