Paula West

Paula West returns to SFJAZZ with an exclusive tribute to vocalist June Christy’s enchanting 1955 recording Something Cool, featuring fresh arrangements by pianist Adam Shulman. A benchmark of the 1950’s “cool” jazz sound, Something Cool was Christy’s debut recording and became a smash hit, reaching the top 20 on the American album charts. West had always wanted to pay tribute to this most influential recording, so she jumped at the chance to pay tribute in for this Hotplate-style show. Among the most in-demand singers on the international scene, Paula West criss-crosses the globe for concerts and cabaret residencies in San Francisco, Istanbul, Moscow, and New York, where her nights at the Algonquin Hotel’s famed Oak Room have earned her three straight New York magazine Nightlife awards as “Outstanding Female Jazz Vocalist.” The New York Times has been particularly vocal in their praise for West, singling out her “thickly textured voice [that] has ripened into a driving expressive force” and an “ever-deepening feel for the blues.” This unforgettable evening pairs a beloved Bay Area jazz treasure with one of the most enduring albums of the “cool” jazz era, and is a must-see event.
