Hussain, Chaurasia, Kumar & Ganesh

The scion of a legendary Hindustani percussion dynasty, Zakir Hussain is universally acknowledged as the world’s greatest tabla virtuoso, a master of classical North Indian music who has collaborated with a glittering roster of international stars. Bay Area audiences have been fortunate to experience Hussain’s groundbreaking creative journey up close since he settled in the region to teach at San Anselmo’s Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in 1970. As a bandleader, a dogged promoter of Hindustani and South Indian Carnatic traditions, a Bollywood and Hollywood film composer, and a pioneer of world music and Indo-jazz fusion, he’s blazed a mind-boggling array of musical trails. His SFJAZZ Center residency showcases a cross section of his creative pursuits, building on longstanding relationships and introducing several new ones.

Getting back to his roots, Hussain leads a classical ensemble of rising North and South Indian masters featuring flutist Rakesh Churasia, the nephew of flute legend Hariprasad Chaurasia, sitarist Niladri Kumar, who toured with Hussain’s Masters of Percussion series, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, one half of the acclaimed violin virtuoso duo, Ganesh and Kumaresh. This promises to be an unforgettable presentation of Indian classical music by four master musicians.
