Ralph Alessi Baida Quartet

The opening night of Jason Moran’s week as Resident Artistic Director focuses on the sublime quartet assembled on San Francisco-born trumpeter Ralph Alessi’s new ECM Records release, Baida. An incredibly dynamic ensemble described by The New York Times as “unstoppably inventive,” the band was first heard as a unit on Alessi’s 2002 CD This Against That, an album that made JazzTimes magazine’s Top 10 for the year. Alessi cut his teeth in the classical realm, learning from his classical musician father and performing with the San Francisco Symphony. Now a celebrated performer, composer and bandleader on the New York jazz scene, he has led 10 albums and performed extensively with bass giant Charlie Haden and saxophonist Steve Coleman. Standing in for Drew Gress is bass virtuoso Chris Lightcap, a veteran of work with artists including Regina Carter and Chris Potter. His album Deluxe was named one of the year’s best by NPR, The New York Times, the Village Voice and The Wall Street Journal. Drummer Nasheet Waits is the son of jazz drumming luminary Freddie Waits and is a longstanding member of Jason Moran’s quartet, The Bandwagon. He is an in-demand sideman and had long-term associations with Max Roach’s percussion ensemble M’BOOM, pianist Andrew Hill and saxophonist Antonio Hart.

About Jason Moran

An ambitiously creative musician who won DownBeat magazine’s triple crown for Jazz Artist, Pianist and Album of the year in 2011, Jason Moran is jazz’s wild card, a probing conceptualist who transforms everything he touches into a bracingly contemporary statement. Recipient of the coveted MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2010 and the new Kennedy Center Artistic Advisor for Jazz, the 37-year-old pianist has developed at an exponential rate in the company of his supremely flexible quartet the Bandwagon, honing an approach that soaks up influences and reconfigures them to suit his own exacting needs. As a Resident Artistic Director, the multi-faceted Moran is performing in a wide-ranging array of settings.
