Jason Moran with Imani Winds

The opening night of Jason Moran’s June residency is a collaboration between the pianist and the Grammy-nominated chamber ensemble Imani Winds. Formed in 1997, the wind quintet has graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Disney Hall and Kennedy Center as well as festivals and concert halls all over the world. The group is well known for the great diversity of its repertoire, which runs the gamut from Romantic period chamber pieces to atonal 20th century music, tango and jazz. Through their Legacy Commissioning Project, they have commissioned and premiered a series of new works by some of the brightest composers working today, including Jason Moran, whose four part suite Cane was featured on the quintet’s jazz-centric album Terra Incognita, along with music by Wayne Shorter and Paquito D’Rivera. Recently, Imani Winds have been touring with Wayne Shorter’s quartet and were featured prominently on his acclaimed new Blue Note album, Without a Net. Their newest project is an EP recording featuring a wind arrangement of Igor Stravinsky’s landmark composition The Rite of Spring. This night of chamber jazz is sure to be a highlight of our second season.

About Jason Moran

An ambitiously creative musician who won DownBeat magazine’s triple crown for Jazz Artist, Pianist and Album of the Year in 2011, Jason Moran is jazz’s wild card, a probing conceptualist who transforms everything he touches into a bracingly contemporary statement. Recipient of the coveted MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2010 and the new Kennedy Center Artistic Advisor for Jazz, the 37-year-old pianist has developed at an exponential rate in the company of his supremely flexible quartet the Bandwagon, honing an approach that soaks up influences and reconfigures them to suit his own exacting needs.
