Lavay Smith feat. Quinn Deveaux
The Music of Ray Charles
Who better to celebrate Ray Charles’ soulful and swinging music than saucy Ms. Smith and the jolting jazz players in the Skillet Lickers? They’re joined for this revue-style show, which covers Charles’ soul and C&W music, by the sensational singer-guitarist Quinn DeVeaux and his Raylettelike singers, the Quinettes. Treasured San Francisco chanteuse Lavay Smith brings a touch of the blues to everything she sings. Backed by her ever-grooving Skillet Lickers, with some of the Bay Area’s best musicians, Smith will put her signature sassy swing on Charles’ timeless mix of gospel, country, blues and jazz. The Skillet Lickers are led by pianist, arranger and founding member Chris Siebert, a bona fide authority on swing, jazz and blues. The band also features Danny Armstrong, a tremendous trombonist and singer, and ferocious saxophone battles between Robert Stewart and Jules Broussard, the latter a Bay Area jazz hero since the 1960s. Like the sweating gospel churches that begat the soul music of the late 50’s and 60’s, the combination of Lavay Smith, Quinn DeVeaux and Ray Charles will have the audience on their feet and feeling the spirit!
