Tiffany Austin

One of the Bay Area’s finest young vocalists returns following her salute to songwriting giant Hoagy Carmichael with a new program in tribute to singer, composer, and social activist Abbey Lincoln. An L.A. native, Tiffany Austin spent five years in Japan as a singer before moving to the East Bay in 2009 to study at the UC Berkeley School of Law. During her studies, the pull of music was too strong to ignore, and she earned a full scholarship to the California Jazz Conservatory (formerly known as the JazzSchool), where she worked extensively with renowned Brazilian pianist Marcos Silva. Austin’s refreshing approach to the jazz tradition blends elements of R&B, hip-hop, and the blues in equal measure, creating a fresh and invigorating hybrid that stirs the soul and moves the body. She has performed at Yoshi’s, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Skirball Center and Stern Grove, sharing the stage with artists including Roy Ayers, John Handy, Marcus Shelby, Adam Theis, and Howard Wiley. This performance finds Austin turning to the music associated with Lincoln, whose impassioned voice was both a sublime vehicle for jazz classics and synonymous with the protest songs of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.
