Dave Holland, Chris Potter, Kevin Eubanks & Eric Harland
Throughout his career Dave Holland has been a part of many of jazz’s greatest ensembles, from Miles Davis’ early ‘70s electric bands, the improvisational quartet Circle with Chick Corea, and the epochal Gateway Trio with guitarist John Abercrombie and drummer Jack DeJohnette to Holland’s own Big Band, Quintet, and Sextet. The bassist has an established history for making his bands a proving ground for promising young instrumentalists, but his latest quartet is a true all-star assemblage of jazz heavyweights, all established bandleaders and composers who represent the world standard. Built on the framework of Holland’s power-packed Overtone Quartet, which matched the leader's agile bass with the bebop acuity of Chris Potter’s masterful saxophone playing and the hip-hop influenced virtuosity of Eric Harland’s drumming, this new band has as its linchpin the guitar work of Kevin Eubanks, whose searing, soulful approach was last heard during Season 2 as part of Holland’s rock-informed Prism project. Eubanks was also key to the muscular quartet that recorded Holland’s seminal 1990 ECM release Extensions, and this new band is yet another example of Holland’s brilliance at building ensembles greater than the sum of their formidable parts. This is a band for the ages.
