Mike Clark of The Headhunters

Sacramento-born Mike Clark is a purebred jazz artist, a primary architect of the revolutionary “East Bay” style of linear funk drumming, and one of the most sampled drummers in modern hip-hop and R&B. Best known as part of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Headhunters band of the early 1970s, Clark recorded the 1974 jazz/funk masterpiece Thrust with Hancock and has continued to work with various incarnations of the Headhunters as well as with Donald Harrison, Larry Coryell, Tony Bennett. The pair’s newest Random Act album, Expedition 2, received a 4½ star review from DownBeat and features bassist Christian McBride, trumpeter Wallace Roney, and saxophonist Hailey Niswanger.
