Eliane Elias invites Steps Ahead
Sunday brings the long-awaited reunion of one of jazz’s most beloved and powerful jazz ensembles of the 1980s. Formed by vibraphonist Mike Mainieri in 1979, the band has featured an ever-changing cast of top class instrumentalists over its almost four decade existence. Eliane Elias was the featured pianist on the first major record release of Steps Ahead in 1983 and is inviting the band to join her after a wildly successful summer European festival tour last year which included performances at Montreux, North Sea, Umbria and Molde Jazz Festivals. Eliane will be joined by original Steps members Mike Mainieri (vibes) and Peter Erskine (drums) and Steps alumni Marc Johnson (bass) and Bob Sheppard (saxophones). She will be bringing several of her own compositions as well as touching on some of the group’s early hits. She also promises to sing a couple tunes from her new CD, Dance of Time with Mike Mainieri, who performed on the recording. This super band comes together for Eliane Elias’ final night of residency- a welcome return for one of the most brilliant and respected jazz groups of the late 20th century.
