Dave Douglas Meets the Westerlies

NPR Music's Songs We Love: The Westerlies, 'Saro'

Joe Henderson Lab will see an unprecedented show of prevailing winds on this night, as trumpet virtuoso and former SFJAZZ Collective member Dave Douglas joins the renowned chamber-jazz brass quartet The Westerlies for a night devoted to fresh compositions written expressly for this collaboration. Easily ranking among the greatest trumpeters to emerge in the latter half of the 20th century, Douglas was championed by jazz legend Horace Silver in the late 1980s before striking out on his own in the 90s as a bandleader and member of maverick saxophonist/composer John Zorn’s long-lived Masada quartet. Douglas was part of the SFJAZZ Collective from 2007-2009, and has recorded over 40 albums in formats from duo to big band – for the last decade on his own Greenleaf imprint. Always pushing beyond the strictures of straight-ahead jazz, Douglas has worked extensively in classical and chamber music settings, recording with So Percussion and most recently releasing Fabliaux, a suite of exploratory music for the improvising Australian orchestra Monash Art Ensemble. Formed in 2011, The Westerlies are the premier brass quartet working today, with a repertoire of over 50 original compositions, adaptations of music ranging from Duke Ellington and Stephen Foster to Bèla Bartok and György Ligeti, and a history of collaboration with Vieux Farka Touré and Bill Frisell.
