Omar Sosa & NDR Bigband

A world traveler who carries the verdant sounds and traditions of his native Cuba where ever he goes, pianist/percussionist and seven-time GRAMMY Award nominee Omar Sosa has forged powerful creative alliances around the globe. With more than two dozen albums as a leader or co-leader, he’s recorded an extraordinary array of original music, but nothing quite like 2010’s Ceremony (Otá Records), a collaboration between his quartet and the storied 17-piece Hamburg-based NDR Bigband. On a tour presenting the music for the first time in the U.S., Sosa rejoins forces with the talent-laden German ensemble, which has recorded critically hailed projects with artists such as Joe Sample, Abdullah Ibrahim, Bill Frisell, and Alan Broadbent. Featuring Sosa’s gorgeous original compositions arranged by the great Brazilian cellist/composer Jaques Morelenbaum, the music unfolds with sweeping power, evoking sacred Yoruba chants, elegant danzónes, and the polyrhythmic patterns of Ecuador’s Esmeraldas (where Sosa lived before his 1990s Bay Area sojourn). Now based in Palma Mallorca, Spain, Sosa continues to expand his creative purview as one of jazz’s brightest international stars.

"Sosa's music is the unifying sort, yoking together Africa and jazz and Latin America and hip-hop. He makes it work, being one of those rare birds whose keyboard skills are near those of Chick Corea or Chucho Valdés " — The New York Times
"Sosa is one of the truly illuminated minds of world jazz. He is shaping a new synthesis of Latin and American jazz. " — Billboard
