Ravi Coltrane & "The Void"
Following his weeklong residency in December 2014 in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of his father John Coltrane’s immortal masterpiece A Love Supreme, renowned saxophonist and composer Ravi Coltrane returns with his exciting new sextet “The Void” featuring trumpeter Ralph Alessi and SFJAZZ Collective trombonist Robin Eubanks. Born in Long Island to jazz giant John Coltrane and pianist/harpist/composer Alice Coltrane, Ravi was raised in Los Angeles, and following studies at Cal Arts, he was enlisted by no less than John Coltrane Quintet drummer Elvin Jones to perform as part of his masterful Jazz Machine band – a group well known as an incubator for future jazz giants. Since the early 1990s, the young Coltrane has worked extensively with M-Base originator Steve Coleman, Wallace Roney, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Branford Marsalis, and Herbie Hancock. He collaborated with his cousin, superstar electronic music producer Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison), and was instrumental in bringing his mother back into the public eye as a performer and recording artist. Coltrane has released six ambitious albums as a leader, including his latest for Blue Note, Spirit Fiction, and has recently been performing as part of drummer Jack DeJohnette’s superb trio with bassist Matt Garrison, son of John Coltrane Quintet bassist Jimmy Garrison. With an unmatched skill for invention and exploration, Ravi carries the Coltrane legacy into the 21st century.
