Fela Kuti

Since Fela Kuti and Afrobeat took the world by storm in the late 60s through the 70s and 80s, the infectious mix of West African highlife and yoruba with American funk, soul and jazz has spread far and wide. The legacy of Fela and many other Afrobeat innovators such as Tony Allen, Cymande, Orlando Julius, William Onyeabor and Femi Kuti has in turn influenced a new generation of musicians, from Brian Eno and Talking Heads, to Daptone Records' Antibalas, The Budos Band and The Daktaris, to jazz and hip-hop artists Common, Questlove, Robert Glasper and Roy Hargrove.

Trace the "Afrobeat Legacy" in a curated playlist ahead of Antibalas' date at SFJAZZ on April 8.
